Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning at Semper Elementary
Semper Elementary students receive social emotional learning in a variety of ways. All students receive instruction from a trained Social Emotional Learning Specialist. We also offer an affective needs center based program for students who need individualized instruction geared toward their specific needs.
Affective Needs: Pioneer Program
Semper’s affective needs center program is called the Pioneer Program. The Pioneer Affective Needs Program’s mission is to provide whole child skill development, which focuses on social-emotional skills, using individualized defined supports for student integration into the larger general education classes.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)
SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
